Syringes and Needles from Hamilton

Syringes

Hamilton Glass Syringes are the Standard in Precision Measurement

Top quality materials and skilled workmanship ensure Hamilton syringes consistently deliver the highest possible performance for reliable analyses. Choose from more than 2,000 chemistry syringes and accessory part numbers or work with us to custom-build your own.

Hamilton continuously researches new materials and methods to improve the fit, form, and function of their borosilicate glass syringe and needle configurations. The syringe catalog includes options for luer slip tips, nickel-plated brass luer lock terminations, and even heat-resistant 200°C Headspace Syringes.

Microliter vs. Gastight Syringes

Microliter Syringes for Liquids

Microliter syringes incorporate a hand-fitted stainless steel plunger with a finely bored syringe barrel. These syringes are ideal for organic samples that are not prone to precipitation, crystallization or bonding with glass.

Under the proper conditions, plunger wear is minimal and the life of a Microliter syringe is almost unlimited. However, when using heterogeneous solutions with a Microliter syringe, the user must be especially diligent about cleaning the syringe after each use. In some cases, even diligent cleaning is not sufficient and the barrel will become soiled. The deposits on the glass will compromise the tight tolerances between the glass and the plunger resulting in a frozen plunger. Plungers for Microliter syringes cannot be interchanged or replaced if damaged.

For aqueous and low volatile solutions, a Gastight syringe is the best option.

Gastight Syringes for Liquids and Gases

Gastight syringes have a precision-machined polymer plunger tip, often PTFE, which creates a leak-free seal. With the tight fit, the tip essentially wipes the interior of the syringe barrel free of sample. This feature is particularly useful with aqueous and low volatile organic samples because it reduces the chance that a deposit will occur and cause the plunger to freeze.

The Gastight series still requires careful and regular cleaning to minimize deposits on the glass which might score the soft PTFE plunger tip and result in a leak.

Needles

Hamilton Lab Needles

Hamilton Company offers the widest variety of standard lab and custom lab needles in the industry. Manufactured from 304 stainless steel and with needle gauges from 10 to 34, and lengths from 0.4 to 12 inches, almost any syringe needle is possible. Multiple laboratory needle hub styles are available, including Luer Lock, small/large hub removable needle hubs, hat hub, and hub-less.

Several different Hamilton needle point styles are offered on our syringe and needle products, depending on the application. The correct point style varies depending on the intended application. Below are a few examples of common applications.

  • Manual GC Injections: Historically a Point Style 2 was required to achieve efficient septum penetration with minimized coring. With Hamilton’s new line of GC septa there is evidence that indicates the Point Style AS will consistently extend septa life by as much as 10-fold.
  • Manual HPLC Injections: Most manual injection valves are designed to be used with a 22 gauge Point Style 3 needle.
  • Drawing Sample: Any point style will efficiently draw a sample, but when it is important to get the last drop out of a vial use Point Style 3 or AS to reach all the way to the bottom.
  • Animal Injections: Animal injections require the sharpest needle possible. The recommended needle point style for this application is a Point Style 4 at a 12° bevel. For applications where injection site depth is critical or the target is small, a more vertical bevel as shown below, such as a 30 or 45°, is suggested.

Lab Needles >> Needle Length Guide

The needle length for most standard Hamilton needles is 51 mm ± 1 mm. If a custom length is desired, it is critical to understand how to specify the desired length. The table below shows the length that is specified when ordering each hub style.

Custom needles are available in lengths from 10 mm to 304 mm. If a longer needle is required, contact us to determine available possibilities.

Metal Hub Needle

Needle length is specified from the needle point to the start of the hub.

Kel-F Hub Needle

Needle length is specified from the needle point to the start of the hub.

Standard Removable Needle (RN) Hub Needle

This hub is used for needles between 18-26 gauge. Needle length is specified from the needle point to the start of the RN nut. The distance from the needle point to the hub is length + 1.8 mm.

Small Gauge Removable Needle (RN) Hub Needle

This hub is used for needles between 27-34 gauge. Needle length is specified from the needle point to the start of the support sleeve.

Hat Hub Needle

Needle length is specified from the needle point to the start of the installation hardware. The distance from the needle point to the back end of the hub is length + 14.22 mm.

Needle Point Styles

Needle Point Style 2

Sharp, beveled, curved, non-coring needle point recommended for piercing septa.

Available gauges: 34-10.

Needle Point Style 3

Blunt needle point for use with HPLC injection valves and for sample pipetting.

Available gauges: 34-10.

Needle Point Style 3T

Blunt needle point for thin layer chromatography (TLC) applications. Needles are coated with PTFE 3/4″ up from the needle tip.

Available gauges: 26s, 26, 22s, 22.

Needle Point Style 4

Standard 12° beveled needle point is recommended for life science applications.

Available gauges: 34-10. Special point styles such as 30°, 45°, or other angles between 12-60° are available upon request.

Needle Point Style 5

Conical needle with side port for penetration of septa, thin-gauged vinyls and plastics without coring.

Available gauges: 26-10.

Needle Point Style AS

Special conical style needle point used on autosampler syringes the non-coring needle point is recommended for septum penetration.

Available gauges: 26-10.
